Abstract: The essay proposes some striking examples of comic and grotesque animals in music. They are very not frequent cases, but there are significant. These are not very frequent cases but there are those which are significant. The first example is the Roman de Fauvel, set to music by Philippe de Vitry in the early decades of the fourteenth century. The protagonist, an animal – a donkey or a horse, – conquers the throne by means of fraud and represents the perversions of power. The music is characteristic of the Ars Nova style. After the seventeenth-century Festino nella sera del giovedì grasso by Adriano Banchieri, the essay analyzes and compares two compositions of the twentieth century that have foxes as protagonists: Renard of Stravinsky and La piccola volpe astuta of Jànaček. Common elements in the music of these compositions: often archaic modalities, popular ideas, use of onomatopoeia.
